Registered Nurse Oncology

Job Summary:

The Chemotherapy Registered Nurse provides specialized nursing care to chemotherapy patients, including administration of chemotherapy medications, patient assessment, treatment planning, and collaboration with physicians, nurse practitioners, and interdisciplinary teams. This role requires strong communication, critical thinking, and the ability to respond quickly to changes in patient conditions to ensure safe, high-quality care. The nurse also performs administrative duties, patient education, triage, counseling, and participates in performance improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities:
• Administer chemotherapy medications and treatments as prescribed by accredited physicians and nurse practitioners.
• Perform comprehensive patient assessments and initiate computerized Plans of Care/Standards of Care on admission.
• Communicate effectively with Chemotherapy Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Manager, and co-workers regarding patient status and policy updates.
• Provide patient education, counseling, and triage related to chemotherapy treatment and side effects.
• Participate in performance improvement plans and required education programs.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and convey empathy and compassion to patients experiencing pain, grief, or trauma.
• Work independently while following institutional policies and procedures.
• Support patients' age-specific, cultural, physical, and psychosocial wellbeing.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Certifications:
• Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing.
• Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Oregon.
• At least one year of acute care or medical/surgical nursing experience.
• BLS certification.
• ONS Chemotherapy & Biotherapy Provider Card.
• Strong communication and critical thinking skills.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
• Previous oncology nursing experience.
• Oncology Nursing Certification or willingness to obtain within three years of hire.
Special Considerations:
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, unpredictable healthcare environment with exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials.
• Physical ability to perform patient care tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds and assisting with patient transfers using proper techniques or mechanical aids.
• Compliance with safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Must maintain patient confidentiality and demonstrate empathy in patient interactions.
Scheduling:
• Work schedule typically involves shifts in an indoor healthcare setting such as hospital or clinic.
• Shift types and hours may vary based on patient care needs and institutional policies.
