Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Patient Care Assistant for our Oncology/MedSurg unit at Manchester Memorial Hospital. In this vital role, you will provide crucial bedside support to our patients, ensuring they receive the care and attention they deserve. Your responsibilities will include monitoring vital signs, assisting with hygiene, helping patients with mobility, and closely observing patient status.

You will also work alongside our nursing team, supporting them with treatments, specimen collection, and maintaining accurate documentation in the EHR. Your commitment to creating a clean and safe environment is essential to our infection control efforts. Additionally, you will engage with patients and their families, offering emotional support in their times of need.

Key Responsibilities
• Deliver bedside care including vital signs, hygiene assistance, and support with mobility.
• Assist nursing staff in treatments, specimen collection, and basic medical procedures.
• Maintain accurate documentation of care and patient observations in the EHR.
• Monitor patient status continuously and respond promptly to call lights.
• Uphold infection control standards and ensure a clean, safe environment.
• Support patient admissions, transfers, and discharges efficiently.
• Communicate effectively with RNs, physicians, and multidisciplinary team members.
• Provide emotional support to patients and their families during care.
• Report any changes in patient conditions to nursing staff immediately.
• Participate actively in unit safety and quality improvement initiatives.

Essential Skills
• Proficient in measuring vital signs and reporting them accurately.
• Experienced in providing patient hygiene and mobility assistance.
• Skilled in Electronic Health Records (EHR) documentation.
• Knowledgeable in infection control practices.
• Able to collect specimens and perform basic phlebotomy and point-of-care testing.
• Familiar with safe patient handling and transfer techniques.
• Adept at observing and reporting changes in patient status.
• Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) skills.
• Strong team communication abilities in clinical environments.
