PERSONAL SCIENTIFIC SUMMARY I am a cancer scientist driven by one persistent question: what changes in a cell—and in the ecosystem around it—before cancer becomes irreversible? Over the past 19 years, my work has taken me across molecular biology, pediatric oncology, tumor immunology, T-cell biology, experimental therapeutics, translational research, and laboratory leadership. I have studied oncogenic signaling, epigenetic regulation, immune exhaustion, inflammation, and the tumor microenvironment using cell-based systems, animal models, human tissues, and molecular approaches. What has remained constant throughout my career is a fascination with biological transitions—the moment a protective immune response becomes dysfunctional, when a normal cell acquires a new identity, or when inflammation and injury create conditions that allow disease to evolve. My work on T-cell exhaustion and immune regulation has particularly shaped how I think about cancer: tumors do not develop in isolation. They emerge within complex ecosystems shaped by epithelial cells, immune cells, inflammatory signals, environmental injury, and evolutionary pressure. I now want to bring my scientific experience into the study of the earliest stages of cancer development—understanding not only how tumors progress, but how they begin, and ultimately, how they might be intercepted before they become clinically irreversible. I bring the perspective of an experienced experimental scientist, the curiosity of someone still deeply motivated by unanswered biological questions, and the discipline of a laboratory leader who understands that meaningful discoveries require both scientific imagination and rigorous execution.
