Photo Assistant
Position Overview
Our retail client is seeking a reliable, detail-oriented Photo Assistant to support photographers across studio and location shoots. The Photo Assistant will help set up and operate lighting, assist with set build and breakdown, manage equipment and logistics, and ensure smooth on-set operations. This role is hands-on and collaborative, ideal for someone who enjoys problem-solving in a fast-paced creative environment and wants to grow their technical and production skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up, adjust and strike lighting equipment (strobes, continuous lights, modifiers, flags) under the direction of the photographer and gaffer.
- Assist with construction, dressing and breakdown of sets and props; follow set plans and execute last-minute changes quickly and safely.
- Prepare, organize and maintain camera and lighting gear; check batteries, test cables, label and pack gear for transport.
- Support camera operations as needed (lens changes, tripod/head swaps, basic tethering and focus pulling) and assist with file wrangling and shot logging.
- Rig and handle grip equipment (stands, clamps, sandbags, booms) and ensure safe load-in/load-out procedures on location.
- Troubleshoot on-set technical issues, suggest practical solutions, and adapt to changing creative requirements.
- Drive a 16' box truck that will be weighted to maximum capacity.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a photo assistant, lighting assistant, or similar on-set role preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of studio and location lighting techniques, modifiers and power distribution.
- Practical experience with set build, rigging, grip equipment and basic carpentry or set dressing.
- Familiarity with camera systems, lenses and basic tethering/file management workflows.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks under tight timelines.
- Physically fit and able to lift and carry heavy equipment (50+ lbs) and work long days on set.
- Valid drivers license and reliable transportation for travel between studios and locations.
- Professional attitude, strong communication skills, and ability to take direction and collaborate with diverse teams.
- Portfolio, references or contactable production credits that demonstrate relevant experience are a plus.
