A confidential California law firm is seeking a litigation associate (2 to 3 years) to join a focused practice handling maritime and transportation disputes, including insurance-related matters. This is a 100% litigation position suited to an attorney who wants hands-on responsibility, strong writing opportunities, and the chance to build subject-matter depth in a niche litigation area.

THE ROLE






- Manage matters from inception through resolution, including trial and appeal as applicable.
- Draft pleadings, written discovery, and substantive motions; handle legal research and develop case strategy.
- Prepare for and participate in depositions, hearings, mediations, and other litigation events.
- Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, experts, and other stakeholders with professionalism and sound judgment.






LOCATION, SCHEDULE AND COMPENSATION





Location:

San Francisco Bay Area, California.





Schedule:

Hybrid with an in-office expectation of 3 days per week; greater in-office emphasis during the first 3 to 6 months.





Compensation:

$180,000 base salary.





REQUIREMENTS






- Active California Bar admission (required).
- 2 to 3 years of insurance defense and/or civil litigation experience; plaintiff-side experience will be considered.
- Proven ability to manage cases through key litigation milestones, including trial and appeal as applicable.
- Excellent legal writing and research skills; writing sample(s) required.
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.






PREFERRED BACKGROUND






- Interest in maritime law and transportation-related disputes, including cargo matters.
- Experience with marine insurance coverage litigation, maritime personal injury, or related maritime disputes.
- Interest in client relationship development and contributing to the growth of a specialized litigation practice.






COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS






- Comprehensive benefits package, including 401(k) with profit sharing.
- Medical insurance (100% coverage for a Kaiser plan), plus dental and vision insurance.
- Bonus structure described as starting at $1,650; after approximately 18 months, strong performance can support bonuses in the $20,000 to $30,000 range.
