About the Cancer Center & Department:

The University of Kansas Cancer Center is an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The University of Kansas Health System, the University of Kansas Medical Center, Children’s Mercy, and BAMF Health recently announced a collaboration on a new, fully integrated theranostics research and treatment center—one of the first of its kind in the nation. This center will unite diagnostics, molecular imaging, radiopharmaceutical production, targeted therapies, and external beam radiation therapy with three new vaults under one coordinated platform.

The Department of Radiation Oncology provides cancer care throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area, treating over 250 patients daily. As the first department in the U.S. to complete a Varian ARIA/Eclipse v18.0 upgrade, we maintain close relationships with equipment vendors, offering unique collaborative opportunities.

Additional program highlights include:

• Advanced Technology: KU’s IBA ProteusONE is projected to be the first in the region to deliver FLASH and arc therapy.

• Commissioning Experience: With at least four LINACs scheduled for installation or replacement over the next three years, residents have a rare opportunity to commission a LINAC during their two-year residency.

• Specialized Brachytherapy: KUMC Radiation Oncology is one of only a dozen ABS fellowship training sites for both HDR and LDR brachytherapy for prostate and gynecological cancers.

• Robust Division: The Division of Medical Physics is staffed by 20+ faculty medical physicists, 20+ medical dosimetrists, and 6 medical physics residents. The division holds a rapidly growing national reputation in proton therapy, FLASH, treatment planning, dosimetry, IGRT, adaptive radiation therapy, and quality assurance.
