## Role Overview
This job engages in advanced clinical social work practice in the medical setting based on the application of social work theory, knowledge, ethics, and methods to restore or enhance social, psychosocial, or bio-psychosocial functioning of individuals, couples, families, groups, organizations, and communities. The role applies specialized clinical knowledge and advanced clinical skills in prevention, assessment, and treatment of mental, emotional, behavioral, and addictive disorders. It involves multi-disciplinary treatment planning and clinical social work duties, coordinating and implementing complex discharge plans through company and community-based services.
## Qualifications and Requirements
- **Education:** Master’s in social work (MSW) is required.
- **Experience:** A minimum of 5 years of related experience is required; experience in a medical social work field is preferred.
- **Certifications:** Current Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the state of practice and able to engage in independent practice. Licensure or certification as a sex therapist may be required depending on area of assignment.
## Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Good knowledge of common disease entities, disorders, and medical terminology to understand acute and ongoing needs of patients and families.
- Excellent psychotherapeutic skills.
- Superior interpersonal skills to deal effectively and courteously with patients, families, multi-disciplinary team members, departmental peers, and community agency personnel.
- Advanced knowledge of acute and chronic care medical settings, medical terminology, and the psychosocial and economic effects of illness or trauma on patients and their support systems.
- Advanced knowledge of managed care and public programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, and commercial insurance plans.
- Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, able to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
## Key Duties
- Interview and assess patients and assist throughout the patient care plan.
- Identify and provide helpful resources to patients and families.
- Maintain patient records and document and communicate critical information to the medical team.
- Participate in on-call rotation.
- Adapt behavior to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy, method of introduction, adapting explanation of services, requesting permissions, and communication style.
- Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all policies and standards.
## Physical and Environmental Demands
Medium Work: exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly. Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid, or tissue, but potential exposure may occur. The incumbent works with patients who have known or suspected communicable diseases and may enter isolation rooms. There may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or waste.
