Scientist – Oligonucleotide Chemistry

We are seeking a creative, self-motivated, and collaborative Scientist II to join the
Nucleic Acid Design and Discovery (NADD) team within the Protein Sciences organization at a leading biotechnology company in South San Francisco.

This scientist will support oligonucleotide therapeutic discovery and RNAi biology research, working as part of an interdisciplinary chemistry team. The role will contribute to oligonucleotide synthesis, purification, characterization, method development, and progression of compounds toward preclinical studies.

Key Responsibilities


- Perform hands-on oligonucleotide synthesis using automated oligo synthesizers.
- Develop, optimize, and troubleshoot oligonucleotide synthesis and processing methods.
- Purify and characterize oligonucleotides using HPLC and mass spectrometry.
- Investigate and characterize synthesis impurities and oligonucleotide products.
- Collaborate with scientists across chemistry and biology to coordinate experimental plans and data.
- Conduct literature reviews and propose nucleic acid chemistry strategies.
- Develop methods for scaled-up synthesis of lead oligonucleotide molecules.
- Coordinate material preparation and delivery to support in vitro and in vivo/preclinical studies.
- Maintain and troubleshoot laboratory equipment including oligo synthesizers, HPLC systems, and desalting equipment.
- Analyze experimental data, communicate findings, and contribute to compound progression decisions.
- Maintain high laboratory productivity while following appropriate safety, documentation, and quality practices.


Required Qualifications


- BS or MS in Organic Chemistry, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
- Hands-on experience with oligonucleotide synthesis using automated oligo synthesizers.
- Experience with oligonucleotide purification and characterization.
- Hands-on experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary research environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.


Preferred Qualifications


- Experience with RNAi, siRNA, antisense oligonucleotides, or other oligonucleotide therapeutics.
- Pharmaceutical or biotechnology R&D experience.
- Knowledge of nucleic acid therapeutic modalities and modification chemistries.
- Experience with oligonucleotide impurity profiling.
- Experience with oligonucleotide delivery or bioconjugation.
- Experience with scaled-up oligonucleotide synthesis.
- Experience supporting preclinical drug discovery programs.
