Research Assistant I - Neurosurgery (Neuro Oncology)

Job Description

This position is in the Department of Neurosurgery working with the Neuro-Oncology team in the Research Division.

Some of the projects the position would work on includes:
• Improved outcome of glioblastoma patients by optimizing standard of care through multidisciplinary team work and by combination chemotherapy regimens at recurrence
• Optimum numbers of treatment with high‐dose methotrexate for CNS lymphoma
• Reduced frequency of post lumbar puncture (LP) headache by simple modification of traditional LP procedure.

Along with regular duties, the incumbent would: Review patients’ electronic records to identify and grade adverse events from chemotherapy drugs, tabulate each patient’s survival duration of a given diagnosis in order to calculate median overall survival of a given group of patients.
After review the literature of a given topic/question, summarize the result and write up a manuscript to address a chosen question using data from patients results of our hospital/institution.

Strongly preferred skills: The ideal candidate will
• Have the basic about primary and metastatic brain tumors
• Able to learn extracting and summarizing data from electronic medical record (EPIC)
Able to review literature and to summarize the results
• Able to write manuscripts based on retrospective and literature review of data and results from clinical trials. No wet lab or bench research
experience needed

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, conducts basic/ translational research which may include animal work and other activities according to research protocol. Research activities may include some or all of the following: handle biological samples, laboratory experiments and activities, and data collection.

Position Key Accountabilities:
• Under general supervision, performs laboratory experiments and activities to support research objectives
• Collects, organize and prepares research data to provide needed information to principal investigators and other researchers. Updates notebooks, records, and databases as needed
• Maintains clean laboratory equipment and/or work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
• Orders laboratory and/or other supplies as directed by senior research staff.
• Stays abreast of new and updated procedures and protocols for the research laboratory. Must maintain compliance with required training. May participate in continuing education programs, seminars, and workshops.
• As needed, may coordinate the work of technicians to ensure efficient, timely and high-quality results.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Bachelor's Degree required
May substitute required education with equivalent years of experience beyond the minimum experience requirement.

Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
