Job Description

Under general supervision, the Radiation Therapist performs radiotherapy procedures as prescribed by a physician according to established standards and practices. Provides patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification, registration, and/or assessed competencies. Practice will be in accordance with laws and regulations and will adhere to established policies, procedures, and practice guidelines.
Responsibilities

• Deliver a prescribed and planned course of radiation therapy using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and standards.

• Obtain patient history, answer patient questions, and explain procedures; observe patients for any unusual reactions or events during treatment.

• Follow established departmental and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.

• Schedule patients for treatments; interface with physicist at initiation of treatment; consult with supportive care physicians, nurses, and social workers.

• Check prescription, diagnosis, chart, and patient identification to ensure accurate treatments.

• Prepare electronic and/or written documentation as required by the profession and the department.

• Prepare room and equipment for patient; transfer immobilized patient from stretcher to treatment couch, giving special care to catheters, IVs, oxygen, respirator, chest tubes, and other life support; position patient in prescribed anatomical positions for treatment.

• Reinforce recommendations given to patient by the physician, dietician, or other care provider concerning reactions to treatment and care of the irradiated area.

• Perform verification and port film exposures for all treated areas and make corrections or changes to therapy as directed by physician.

• Enhance professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.

Required Experience / Certifications / Licensure

• A minimum of an associate's degree in radiography with a certification in radiation therapy is required. A bachelor’s degree in radiation therapy is preferred.

• Graduate of a JRCERT approved school registered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy.

• State of Ohio licensed radiation therapist; ARRT license; CPR certified.

• A minimum of 1-2 years of radiation therapy experience is preferred.

• Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills; ability to problem-solve and facilitate resolution to issues; ability to handle multiple priorities; ability to make independent decisions.
