Position Title: Cranial Neurosurgeon-Open Rank (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor), Term Tenure Track

Department: Neurosurgery

Reports to: Chair, Department of Neurosurgery

MISSION STATEMENT

SUMMARY

Clinical:

Provides comprehensive evaluation and surgical management of patients with cranial neurosurgical disorders, with an emphasis on primary and metastatic brain tumors and other intracranial neoplasms. Works collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care. Provides clinical instruction and supervision for fellows, residents, and students in cranial neurosurgery and neurosurgical oncology. Reports to the Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery or a designated faculty leader.

Research:

Develops and participates in clinical, translational, and/or basic science research relevant to cranial neurosurgery and neurosurgical oncology. Contributes to independent and collaborative investigations, peer-reviewed publications, and dissemination of findings. Research responsibilities, expectations for external funding, and leadership contributions will be consistent with the faculty member's academic rank, appointment track, and assigned effort.

Education and Academic Service:

Contributes to the department's educational mission through teaching, supervision, and mentorship of trainees and other health professionals. Participates in departmental and institutional service, quality improvement, and professional activities appropriate to academic rank.

Appointment at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level will be based on qualifications, experience, academic accomplishments, and applicable institutional appointment criteria.

KEY FUNCTIONS

I. Clinical

• Provides exemplary cranial neurosurgical care within the scope of approved clinical privileges and in accordance with applicable professional standards and institutional policies.

• Develops and maintains a cranial neurosurgical practice focused on the evaluation and management of patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors and other intracranial neoplasms.

• Provides outpatient consultation, surgical treatment, inpatient care, perioperative management, and longitudinal follow-up.

• Collaborates with colleagues in neuro-oncology, radiation oncology, neuroradiology, neuropathology, rehabilitation, and other specialties to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.

• Participates in multidisciplinary tumor boards, case conferences, and care coordination activities.

• Provides neurosurgical consultation and call coverage as assigned by the department.

• Collaborates with and assists faculty colleagues in complex cranial procedures as clinically indicated.

• Completes accurate and timely clinical documentation within institutional time frames.

• Reviews and approves procedure charges and applicable ICD-10 and CPT coding within five working days or sooner when required by institutional policy.

• Communicates clearly and promptly with patients, families, referring physicians, and members of the care team regarding treatment options, care plans, and clinical progress.

• Maintains clinical knowledge and surgical skills through continuing education and participation in relevant professional activities.

• Participates in patient safety, quality improvement, and clinical outcomes initiatives.

• Represents the department in local, regional, national, and international professional activities related to cranial neurosurgery and neurosurgical oncology, as appropriate to academic rank.

• Complies with institutional requirements for patient safety, infection prevention, occupational safety, and professional conduct.

II. Research

Actively engages in research and scholarly activities that advance cranial neurosurgery and neurosurgical oncology and support the department's academic mission.

• Develops and conducts clinical, translational, and/or basic science investigations consistent with departmental priorities, appointment track, and assigned research effort.

• Develops research questions, study protocols, and collaborative projects addressing the biology, diagnosis, treatment, or outcomes of intracranial tumors.

• Participates in the development and conduct of clinical trials and other prospective investigations, as appropriate.

• Collaborates with investigators within MD Anderson and at other institutions.

• Analyzes and interprets research findings and disseminates results through peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations.

• Pursues internal and external research support appropriate to the scope of the research program and expectations of the appointment.

• Ensures research activities comply with applicable institutional requirements, including protocol approval, responsible conduct of research, data integrity, and protection of research participants.

• Mentors and supervises trainees and research personnel involved in assigned projects.

• When laboratory research is part of the appointment, develops and oversees laboratory investigations, personnel, resources, and safety practices.

• Demonstrates research productivity, independence, and academic leadership appropriate to rank and appointment track.

III. Education/Teaching

Provides clinical and academic instruction in cranial neurosurgery and neurosurgical oncology for fellows, residents, students, and other health professionals.

• Provides direct teaching and supervision in the operating room, outpatient clinics, inpatient settings, and other clinical learning environments.

• Teaches clinical assessment, surgical decision-making, operative techniques, perioperative care, and multidisciplinary management.

• Develops, reviews, and updates educational materials and learning activities relevant to cranial neurosurgery and neurosurgical oncology.

• Participates in departmental and divisional conferences, case discussions, journal clubs, and continuing education activities.

• Evaluates trainee performance and provides timely, constructive feedback.

• Mentors trainees and junior colleagues in clinical practice, research, professional development, and academic career planning, as appropriate to rank.

• Supports a respectful learning environment that encourages questions, collaboration, and patient safety.

IV. Academic and Administrative Service

• Participates in departmental, divisional, and institutional meetings and committees as assigned.

• Contributes to program development and initiatives that improve patient care, education, research, and departmental operations.

• Participates in professional societies, peer review, and other academic service activities appropriate to rank.

• Assumes leadership responsibilities consistent with experience, academic rank, and departmental needs.

EDUCATION

Required:

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Required:

• Licensure to practice medicine in Texas by the start of clinical duties.

• Board certification in neurological surgery or eligibility for certification, with certification obtained within the department's required timeline, unless an institutional exemption is approved.

• Completion of neurological surgery residency training meeting applicable licensure and institutional credentialing requirements.

• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Basic Life Support, or Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification, as required by institutional policy and assigned clinical responsibilities.

• Eligibility for the clinical privileges necessary to perform the assigned duties.

EXPERIENCE

Required-All Ranks:

• Successful completion of neurological surgery residency training.

• Demonstrated training and clinical competence in cranial neurosurgery, including the surgical management of intracranial tumors.

• Demonstrated commitment to patient care, teaching, scholarship, and multidisciplinary collaboration.

• Qualifications consistent with institutional appointment criteria for the proposed rank and track.

Assistant Professor:

Evidence of potential for academic achievement through clinical excellence, teaching, and research or other scholarly activity consistent with the appointment track.

Associate Professor:

A record of clinical and academic accomplishment, including teaching, scholarship, and professional recognition sufficient to meet institutional criteria for appointment at the Associate Professor level.

Professor:

A sustained record of clinical and academic achievement, mentorship, leadership, and professional recognition sufficient to meet institutional criteria for appointment at the Professor level.

Preferred:

• Fellowship training in neurosurgical oncology, cranial surgery, or a related subspecialty relevant to the position.

• Experience in multidisciplinary management of patients with primary and metastatic brain tumors.

• Research interests and accomplishments that complement the department's clinical and academic programs.
