Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health is seeking a part-time (0.5 FTE), motivated Nurse Practitioner to join our Medical Oncology Team in Lancaster, PA. The Medical Oncology team provides patient-centered care and oncology treatments for patients across the continuum of cancer care.
This unique position combines traditional outpatient medical oncology practice with dedicated evening and weekend oncology coverage. The role follows a structured four-week rotating schedule designed to provide expanded access to oncology care during daytime, evening, and weekend hours.
During scheduled daytime clinic weeks, responsibilities include direct medical care of oncology patients, including treatment follow-up, acute symptom management, cancer surveillance and survivorship, coordination of care for hematologic and oncologic conditions, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. The APP will also evaluate and manage acute infusion and transfusion reactions.
During scheduled evening and weekend coverage, the Nurse Practitioner will provide clinical support for the expanded operations of the cancer institute and serve as an available oncology provider for urgent patient and treatment-related needs.
Responsibilities include:
• Supporting the infusion center during extended cancer treatment hours, including evaluation and management of treatment-related complications, infusion reactions, transfusion reactions, and other acute oncology needs.
• Carrying and responding to the oncology on-call pager from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. on scheduled weekday evenings and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on scheduled Saturdays and Sundays.
• Evaluating and managing IV contrast reactions associated with CT and MRI imaging during after-hours operations through 11:00 p.m.
• Providing urgent after-hours evaluation and treatment for cancer-specific concerns when clinically appropriate.
• Coordinating escalation of care, emergency department evaluation, hospital admission, or other services when indicated.
• Providing clinical support and coordination for blood transfusion needs and treatment-related complications.
• Providing in-basket coverage and management as assigned.
• Collaborating with physicians, nursing, pharmacy, radiology, infusion services, and other members of the multidisciplinary oncology team to ensure safe and timely patient care.
The APPs hired into this model will rotate through a structured four-week schedule, working one evening/weekend rotation every four weeks and one daytime clinic rotation every four weeks, with scheduled weeks off between working rotations. This structure results in each Nurse Practitioner providing approximately one in every four evening rotations and one in every four weekends.
The position includes required holiday coverage when designated holidays fall within the Nurse Practitioner’s scheduled rotation.
Our providers practice primarily at Penn Medicine’s Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute (ABBCI), a 90,000 square foot state-of-the-art cancer center that provides medical, surgical, radiation, and palliative oncology under one roof. Our warm, light-filled, modern cancer institute includes 60 infusion chairs, 53 examination rooms, 4 linear accelerators, brachytherapy, CyberKnife M6, and the da Vinci® Surgical System. Our state-of-the-art proton therapy facility opened in Fall 2022, becoming the second site in Pennsylvania to offer innovative proton radiation therapy to cancer patients. Our medical oncology practice was among the first community-based cancer programs in the United States to offer CAR-T cell therapy (established in 2022), expanding access to advanced cellular therapies outside of traditional academic medical centers.
Hours: Part-time, 0.5 FTE, following a structured four-week rotating schedule (outlined below). Rotation includes required coverage of designated holidays occurring during scheduled working days.
Week 1 – Evening/Weekend Coverage
• Monday – Friday, 5:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
• Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Week 2 – Off
Week 3 – Daytime Clinic
• Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Week 4 – Off
Position Requirements:
Nurse Practitioner
• Valid Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner license and Certificate of Prescriptive Authority in Pennsylvania.
• Certification by ANCC or other qualifying agency in area of specialty (Acute Care NP certification required).
• Valid Pennsylvania Registered Nurse licensure.
• Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
• Two years of Nurse Practitioner experience is preferred.
• Oncology, hospital medicine, urgent care, emergency medicine, or other acute-care clinical experience is preferred.
• Ability to independently evaluate and manage acute oncology and treatment-related concerns and appropriately escalate care when indicated.
