Medical Assistant II

Summary



The Department of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking a caring, compassionate, reliable Medical Assistant to support the clinicians providing primary care services to private practice patients.



As a Medical Assistant II, you will assist in the examination and treatment of patients under the direction of the physicians and/or advanced practice providers. The main responsibilities include interviewing patients, measuring vital signs, and recording information in patients' electronic charts using EPIC. Shifts will include 7:30-4:30; 8:00-5:00; 8:30-5:30; 9:00-6:00; 9:30-6:30, Monday-Friday.



This position is located at our Fannin Tower location in the Texas Medical Center.



Job Duties





- Greets patients and escorts them to exam rooms.
- Performs routine patient care responsibilities such as taking vital signs, drawing blood, and in some cases administering tests such as EKGs.
- Answers clinic telephones and resolves issues or routes calls to appropriate person.

- Collects patient histories, including medication reconciliation.
- Correctly collects and labels patient specimens for lab analysis
- Sets up instruments and equipment according to department protocol.
- Schedules patient tests and appointments and prepares patient charts.
- Maintains patient and services rooms in a neat and orderly condition.
- Conducts patient outreach phone calls and post visit follow-ups.
- Takes an inventory of clinic supplies and orders new supplies and equipment.
- Sorts clinic mail and files patient medical records.
- Educates patients about their conditions and self-care.
- Assists providers in filling out health related paperwork for patients.
- Staffs central college sites as needed.
- Cross trains to gain proficiency in staffing Comm Center, monitors inventory, and converts visits to virtual appointments.

- Monitors assigned provider baskets, completes high priority messages and addresses incoming patient encounters.

- Serves as a resource for navigating complex patient inquiries or procedural nuances.
- Guides entry-level Medical Assistants and externs on best practices and departmental workflows, contributing to the overall training and development of less experienced staff as needed.
- Assists with the onboarding process for new hires by demonstrating key procedures and sharing insights into our specific operational requirements.
- Demonstrates professionalism and maintains mutual respect in all interactions with patients and employees.
- Reports to the worksite on time to support efficient clinic operations and minimize disruptions to patient flow.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned, including floating to other FCM clinic locations.





Minimum Qualifications





- High school diploma or GED and completion of a Medical Assistant Training program through an accredited institution.
- Two years of relevant experience.
- Current certification as a Medical Assistant through an accredited professional organization (AAMA, AMT, ARMA, NCCT, NHA, NAHP, AMCA, AAH, AAMP, or NPS).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through American Heart Association.





Preferred Qualifications





- Knowledge of health care field and medical terminology.
- Experience with Epic.
- Proficiency in Spanish or other language.
- Ability to deal tactfully and courteously in all interactions with a strong understanding of when to elevate issues.
- Ability to type at a minimum of 40 WPM.
