Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a Trust Grade Foundation Year 1 doctor for a 6-month fixed term period commencing October 2026. This post will be based at the Aintree site, located in Fazakerley, Liverpool. The post will give the opportunity for the post holder to gain experience across the Diabetes & Endocrinology bed base over the 6-month period at Foundation Year 1 level in areas. The post holder will be working Monday to Friday 9-5, no oncall.





This role will be supporting consultant delivered patient care. This will include clerking, clinical assessment, ordering and chasing results, handling administrative tasks and queries, procedures and supporting continuity of care processes. Management plans will require senior input. Due to restrictions on prescribing and ionising radiation ordering support will be required from other clinicians in these two areas this will be reviewed as further guidance is produced. Area of work: Wards 20, 21 or 25 and outpatient clinics – Diabetes Centre Clinical job descriptor In-patients This involves providing direct clinical care to patients on the ward including history taking and examinations, formulating differential diagnoses and management plans, requesting and interpreting diagnostic studies and escalating to seniors where appropriate. The medic should document in PENS notes during ward round, action the subsequent plans, which may involve referral and discussion of patients with specialist teams. Prescribing of medications. Discuss ionizing radiation scans/ interventions with a radiologist for vetting and can request endoscopic procedures. On the ward procedural skills include venepuncture, cannulation, blood cultures, arterial blood gases, catheterization and nasogastric tube insertion. The IMT1 is a crucial member of the ward MDT and is heavily involved in daily board rounds as they provide continuity of care for patients. They can be involved in family discussions / updates including DNAR discussions and wider MDT meetings i.e. best interest meetings to convey medical team input to care (after discussion with the named consultant overviewing the patients care). Out-patients The IMT1 can attend formal clinic at least one per week which includes reviewing patients face to face, via telephone and is under close supervision of the patient’s named consultant. The IMT1 should ensure that they are up to date with mandatory training especially those related to the everyday procedures carried out on the ward. Part of the IMT1 ward duties is to complete discharge summaries. Handover The IMT1 can appropriately hand a patient over to the on-call team when required and can in turn, receive handovers. Departmental responsibilities As a team member, providing continuity within the ward department is important. The IMT1 will provide support to the other rotating resident doctors, medical students and PA students. This includes an introduction to the department, sign posting procedures, referrals and protocols and delivering departmental teaching.
