JOB SUMMARY

Baylor Scott & White Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Baylor University Medical Center - Dallas is looking to hire a cancer genetic counselor to join our growing genetics team, located in the heart of a beautiful cancer center. Genetic counselors at Baylor University Medical Center provide genetic education, counseling, and support to individuals and families who may be at risk to have a hereditary cancer syndrome. This position offers a supportive genetic counselor supervisor, medical director, and administrative staff, as well as a continuing education stipend.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE

- Provides cancer genetic counseling services in-person and by telehealth.
- Analyzes and interprets patient and family medical data obtained from patient, medical records, and laboratory results and communicates findings to patients and physicians.
- Maintains appropriate records and writes detailed clinic notes and patient summary letters to provide information on complex genetic concepts to patients and referring physicians.
- Discusses genetic testing options and the associated risks, benefits, and limitations with patients to assist them in making informed decisions.
- Helps patients and family members comprehend the diagnosis, probable cause of the disorder, and available management strategies.
- Educates patients and families on alternatives for dealing with the risk of genetic disorders, choosing a course of action, and recurrence risks.
- Serves as an advocate and provides counseling and support resources to families.
- Able to serve as a clinical rotation supervisor for genetic counseling graduate students.
- Participates in multidisciplinary tumor conferences.
- Provides educational presentations to physicians and participates in community outreach.
- Research opportunities available.

KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

- Advanced understanding of hereditary cancer syndromes and genetic testing laboratories.
- Ability to apply genetic counseling methods and techniques, including communicating in lay terms medical information, test results, recurrence risk, diagnoses, and proposed medical management recommendations.
- Ability to help patients and family members understand the genetic contributions to cancer.
- Able to provide psychosocial support to families.
- Knowledge of community support services.
- Must be able to communicate thoughts clearly; both verbally and in writing.
- Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide-range of constituencies.
- Must have critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Able to maintain a calm, helpful, and positive attitude.
- General computer skills, including but not limited to: using required software applications, risk models, data entry, electronic medical documentation, and email.

• EXPERIENCE - Less than 1 Year of Experience

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION
