Role Overview
As an Oncology Genetic Counselor, you will assess the likelihood of inherited or familial diseases and guide patients and families through understanding genetic conditions, testing options, and implications for care and quality of life. The Genetic Counseling team provides comprehensive risk assessment and genetic testing services for individuals and families who may be affected by hereditary cancer syndromes. Through education, counseling, and personalized support, the team helps patients understand genetic risks, interpret test results, and make informed decisions about their healthcare. Working in collaboration with physicians, advanced practice providers, and other specialists, our genetic counseling professionals play a vital role in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care across the BayCare system.
Key responsibilities include:
• Provide genetic counseling and testing where appropriate to individuals with a personal or family history suggestive of hereditary cancer
• Collect medical and family history from patients and a variety of other sources such as medical records
• Input information into modeling systems to calculate cancer risks for individuals and families.
• Coordinate genetic testing logistics and troubleshoot when issues arise
• Review information with physicians, APPs, and clinical teams to develop treatment plans
• Provide long-term follow-up for patients as necessary
• Maintain patient educational resources and literature
• Help patient and families understand the personal and familial impact of hereditary disease and provide support as they adapt to and cope with information
• Maintain templates for clinical documentation used across the practice
• Assist with growth of genetics services within the practice and participate in outreach activities in the community
• Build strong collaborative relationships within the practice and community to support patient‑centered care
• Host students for clinical rotations to expand the breadth and depth of knowledge of future genetic counselors
• Maintain confidentiality of all information related to patients, medical staff, finances, and other applicable privacy regulations
Qualifications
Education
Required:
• Master's degree in Genetic Counseling
Experience
Preferred:
• One (1) year of Genetic Counseling experience
• New graduates will be considered and trained accordingly
Licensure / Certification
Required:
• Genetic Counseling certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)
• OR Board‑certification eligible within six (6) months
• State of Florida Genetic Counseling License
