Summary of Position: Screens slides for detection and diagnosis of disease by examination of cellular specimens obtained from a variety of sites in the human body. Verifies correctness of examination findings following established quality control and quality assurance procedures and practices. Refers all positive, abnormal, and suggestive cases to a pathologist for final diagnosis.

Minimum Qualifications

Formal Education Required: Baccalaureate degree (BA/BS) and graduation from CAAHEP accredited Cytotechnology program;

OR Before September 1, 1992, have successfully completed two (2) years in an accredited institution (12 semester hours in science, 8 of which are in biology) and have graduated from an accredited school of cytotechnology.

Certified in cytotechnology by a certification agency approved by HHS (e.g.

American

Society of Clinical Pathology).

Other Skills, Competencies and Qualifications: Ability to work where sustained concentration is required despite its often repetitive nature.

Manual dexterity sufficient to operate and troubleshoot laboratory equipment used in the preparation and examination of cytological specimens.

Ability to communicate in written and oral fashion and interact with pathologists and physician staff.

Ability to read, comprehend, and follow detailed laboratory protocols and instructions.

Skill in use of computers or ability to acquire such skills to operate application packages used by department.
