Aboutthe BDA

The BDA is the voice of dentistsand dental students in the UK. We are the trade union, professional associationand scientific society for dentists. Our work brings dentists together torepresent their interests to Government and the NHS and to campaign for policychanges as well as providing support to our members through advice andeducation.

As amembership organisation, the BDA’s duty is to serve the needs of its members.

Aboutthe role

​The post combinesmaintaining an understanding of and an interest in dentistry and oral healthissues, with professional and high-quality committee secretariat skills, theability to communicate effectively and a desire to provide high-quality serviceto BDA members in Scotland. The purpose of the role is toprovide support and advice to committees in Scotland and to ensure that electedofficers, members and colleagues are informed of policy developments in theScottish healthcare system.

​

This is a full-time permanent position. Weanticipate a hybrid approach to working location, with a home working base, alongside attendance at our flexible office space inStirling, as and when required. There will be occasionalrequirements to travel to within Scotland to attend face to face meetings andevents.

​

Aboutyou

The post holder should ideally have thefollowing skills and attributes:

​


- A knowledge of, and interest in, healthcare systems and policy development.
- Experience of supporting committees.
- An analytical mind and ability to assimilate, comprehend and explain information on a range of issues.
- Good organisational skills with the ability to plan and prioritise workloads.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- To be able to provide a high level of service to BDA members and other individuals.
- The ability to work individually and as part of a team.
- Good IT skills.

​About the team

Staffbased in Scotland include the BDA Scotland National Director, CommitteeOfficer, Senior Policy Advisor, Employment Relations Officer and PracticeManagement Consultant for Scotland and Northern Ireland.

​

BDA Scotland andits elected committee members seek to improve conditions for the delivery ofdental services across Scotland, negotiating directly with the Scottish Government.We also seek to influence other key-decision makers, including educationalinstitutions, political parties and statutory and non-statutory organisations.

Ourcommittees meet regularly to consider the issues affecting the dentalprofession and patient


care. BDA representatives take these issues forward intodiscussion and negotiation with the Scottish Government and the range of bodiesresponsible for delivery of health and social care.
