Company Description For more than 40 years, Northern Valley Catholic Social Service (NVCSS) has strengthened individuals, families, and communities throughout Northern California. Today, NVCSS is a complex nonprofit organization with an annual operating budget of approximately $16 million, providing a diverse range of community-based programs and services across multiple counties.
Our work includes advocacy and support services, including CASA, disaster services, immigration legal services, and Enhanced Care Management; housing and homelessness services, including special-needs housing, PATH, and emergency shelter programs; mental health and wellness services, including counseling, school-based services, juvenile hall groups, and wellness and recovery centers; and children and family programs, including Healthy Families, CalWORKs, Butte Baby Steps, FARE, and teen services.
With programs spanning housing, behavioral health, healthcare, advocacy, and family services, NVCSS operates in a complex, multi-funded environment supported by government contracts, Medi-Cal reimbursement, grants, and other funding sources.
Role Description The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides strategic and operational financial leadership for NVCSS, a $16 million nonprofit organization with diverse funding streams and operations.
The CFO oversees a financial portfolio that includes federal, state, and county contracts; Medi-Cal and Enhanced Care Management (ECM) reimbursement; seven affiliated nonprofit organizations; and four Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) affordable housing projects, with an additional development currently under construction.
As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CFO leads the Agency’s finance and accounting functions, including budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, financial reporting, audits, compliance, internal controls, grants and contracts, and Board reporting.
Beyond managing the numbers, the CFO will lead and develop the finance team and serve as a strategic partner to executive and program leadership—strengthening systems, evaluating opportunities, solving complex financial challenges, and supporting NVCSS’s continued growth and long-term financial sustainability.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
- 8-10 years of progressively responsible financial and accounting leadership experience, including significant experience overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, forecasting, audit, and internal controls.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing finance or accounting teams, including supervisory or management responsibility.
- Experience managing financial operations in a complex, multi-funded organization, including government contracts, grants, or other restricted funding.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, cash-flow management, internal controls, and audit requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze financial information, identify risks and opportunities, and translate complex financial information into clear recommendations for leadership and a Board of Directors Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
