Job Description - Chemotherapy Infusion Nurse - Outpatient (2600018G)

All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children’s National Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The professional Model of Care requires registered professional nurses to be responsible and accountable for their own practice. Children’s National supports the development of RN relationships with the community; specifically those relationships associated with the health and well‑being of the community at large. An RN is an independent practitioner who functions as an identified resource to staff in a patient care area. An RN provides comprehensive patient care to a variety of patients, incorporates all members of the health care team in the planning and delivery of patient care, deals successfully with complex clinical problems, conducts quick assessment of patients and handles emergency situations appropriately, and demonstrates evidence‑based practice through participation in unit projects and activities.

Responsibilities

• Administrate chemo/biotherapy, independently and safely.

• Handle and dispose of hazardous drugs safely.

• Identify risk factors and make clear decisions based on risk.

• Communicate clearly with patients and families.

• Manage care of patients with multiple types of central lines (broviacs, port‑a‑cath, PICC lines, etc.) independently.

• Serve as a clinical resource for central lines and chemo/biotherapy for clinical areas that do not routinely care for these.

• Contribute to Magnet re‑designation by independently updating a professional profile and initiating council involvement, committees, task forces, and/or community outreach.

Internal Relations

• Communicate to reflect development of a plan of care and advocate to meet patient needs.

• Independently initiate escalation of issues using the chain of command.

• Use the identified hand‑off processes appropriately.

• Maintain a collegial and respectful relationship with the healthcare team.

• Participate in implementing change and supporting management decisions.

• Model behavior that reflects empathy, concern, and a desire to help others.

Structural Empowerment

• Maintain regulatory requirements such as license and BLS independently.

• Plan for attendance at mandatory education and professional activities to enhance nursing practice.

• Model professional review of peers by timely participation in evaluations.

• Seek opportunities to participate in enhancing departmental goals by ensuring adherence to national safety standards and service excellence standards; support advancement of education and certification as well.

• Collaborate with team members and role‑model professional behavior and teamwork with coworkers.

• Utilize resources as needed and know when to escalate to the next level.

Professional Practice

• Utilize assessment data gathered from patient and family to ensure completion of database and plan of care within identified timeframes.

• Model clinical skills with complex patients, reflecting analysis of patient status and appropriate interventions.

• Prioritize and organize complex patients with rapidly changing needs.

• Document in a manner that exemplifies adherence to the highest standards of practice.

• Anticipate and proactively plan for educational needs verified with patient and family throughout the hospital/outpatient stay and prior to discharge.

• Demonstrate organizational skills, adjust for changes, and complete assignments on time.

• Show caring in all encounters with patient and family as evidenced by feedback from parents and increased patient satisfaction scores.

Program Improvement

• Identify ways to improve operations through quality improvement and assist in implementing solutions.

• Identify self‑learning needs and take initiative to meet those needs.

• Ensure care is evidence‑based, supported by literature and benchmarking.

Qualifications

• Minimum Education: ASN (Required), BSN (Preferred)

• Minimum Work Experience: At least 2 years of hematology/oncology/BMT experience (Required)

• Required Licenses and Certifications: Registered Nurse in Maryland (Required), Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) (Required), APHON Chemobiotherapy Provider (Required)
