Carmen Monge-Montero: Excited to share that I have been selected as an advocate and researcher for the AACR

“Hi Network!

I am excited to share that I have been selected as an advocate and researcher for the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). In one month I will join the AACR Scientist-Survivor Program! A fantastic initiative that connects people with a lived cancer experience with researchers to strengthen the impact of cancer research.

Sometimes I think about how 100 years ago, I wouldn’t be here. Who would have thought that a discovery made in England would one day lead to research that helped find a cure for a young woman in Latin America—and so many others around the world? Thanks to research, I am alive today, and that’s one of the reasons I believe in it so much.

But research isn’t just about treatments—it also helps us understand mental health and how to improve the quality of life for cancer survivors. These findings shouldn’t just stay in scientific papers but are translated into real-life practice—on medical care, policies, or even informal community support.

I’m excited to take part in this meaningful event and share books, Mano Beyond Cancer, and my work as an AYA advocate in Latin America and Europe with Youth Cancer Europe.

As part of this journey, I’ll be running the 2025 AACR Runners for Research 5K Run in Chicago to raise awareness and support lifesaving cancer research

If you’d like to donate, participate, or simply learn more, check out the details here.

It’s inspiring to see so many survivors, researchers, and advocates working together toward progress—no matter where they come from

P.S. The photo is of my sister and me running for breast cancer awareness— months before I even realized I had another type of cancer.”
