The Frederick National Laboratory is operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

Program Description

The Cancer Research Technology Program (CRTP) develops and implements emerging technology, cancer biology expertise and research capabilities to accomplish NCI research objectives. The CRTP is an outward-facing, multi-disciplinary hub purposed to enable the external cancer research community. A major focus of the CRTP is the NCI RAS Initiative with the goal to discover new therapeutic interventions against RAS-driven cancers. In addition, the CRTP hosts the Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory (NCL) which performs and standardizes preclinical efficacy and toxicity testing of nanoparticles intended for cancer therapeutics and diagnostics, and the Antibody Characterization Lab (ACL) which characterizes monoclonal antibodies or other renewable affinity binding reagents for use in cancer related research. CRTP scientists also work collaboratively with intramural NCI investigators to provide research technologies and expertise.

Key Roles/Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain cancer-related cell models.
• Preparation of cellular samples for cryo-FIB milling experiments on Arctis cryo-FIB microscope.
• Provide molecular and cell biology support for cancer-focused research projects.
• Document experimental procedures and results in lab notebooks or electronic record systems.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on structural biology projects.

Basic Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

• Possession of a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Structural Biology, or a related field from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
• Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, including maintenance of immortalized cancer cell lines and/or primary cells, with strong aseptic technique and troubleshooting skills.
• Experience establishing or working with advanced culture systems such as 3D spheroids, organoids, or co-culture/multicellular models.
• Proficiency in core molecular and cell biology techniques.
• Strong organizational skills and meticulous record-keeping ability.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a research team.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

• Prior experience in cancer biology, tumor microenvironment.
• Hands-on experience with CRISPR/Cas-based editing, shRNA/siRNA knockdown, lentiviral transduction, or other methods for engineering cell lines and probing signaling pathways.
• Experience with cryo-FIB/cryo-ET.
• Proficiency in structural biology software.
