Job Description
Join a dedicated healthcare team in the heart of the Midwest region as an Oncology Social Worker. This role focuses on evaluating and addressing the psychosocial, spiritual, emotional, and economic needs of patients, families, and caregivers affected by cancer. You will provide compassionate support, connect individuals with vital resources, and assist them in navigating the challenges that come with a cancer diagnosis.
Key Responsibilities
• Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team to support patient and family needs.
• Assess social determinants of health such as housing, food security, financial aid, employment, language, and cultural barriers.
• Provide guidance on psychosocial issues including diagnosis, treatment decisions, quality of life, care transitions, advance directives, and coping strategies.
• Communicate clearly and document interactions accurately while managing a diverse range of individuals and prioritizing tasks independently.
• Evaluate social, emotional, spiritual, financial, legal, and mental factors impacting patients and families, supporting their coping capacity.
• Connect patients and families to appropriate community resources and provide follow-up as needed.
• Educate staff and community members on psychosocial issues, social determinants of health, and available resources.
• Participate in cancer-related committees and meetings to contribute to patient care planning.
• Maintain productivity standards and complete documentation within required timeframes.
• Provide safe, competent, and age-appropriate care to all referred patients.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Social Work (BSW) required; Master of Social Work (MSW) preferred.
Experience
At least one year of clinical experience in multidisciplinary settings is preferred.
Certifications and Licenses
Licensed social worker preferred.
Mental and Physical Requirements
This role requires considerable mental focus, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to communicate detailed information effectively. Approximately 80% of the time is spent interacting with patients, families, visitors, staff, and physicians. The position involves standing and walking for extended periods using proper body mechanics.
Working Conditions
Minimal physical discomfort with frequent exposure to communicable diseases, radiation, anti-neoplastic agents, and occasionally hostile individuals. Ability to function well under stress is essential.
