Job Description
Join a dedicated healthcare team in the heart of the Midwest as an Oncology Social Worker, providing compassionate support to patients and families navigating the challenges of a cancer diagnosis. This role focuses on addressing the psychosocial, spiritual, emotional, and economic needs of those impacted by cancer, ensuring they receive the resources and guidance necessary for their journey.
Key Responsibilities
• Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team to support patient and family needs.
• Assess and manage social determinants of health including housing, food security, financial aid, employment, language, and cultural barriers.
• Provide counseling on psychosocial issues such as diagnosis impact, treatment decisions, quality of life, care transitions, advance directives, and coping strategies.
• Communicate clearly and document interactions accurately while working independently and prioritizing tasks.
• Evaluate social, emotional, spiritual, financial, legal, and mental factors affecting patients and families, supporting their coping capacity.
• Connect patients and families with appropriate community resources and provide follow-up as needed.
• Educate staff and community members on psychosocial issues, social determinants of health, and available resources.
• Participate in cancer-related committees and meetings to contribute to patient care planning.
• Maintain productivity standards and complete documentation within required timeframes.
• Provide safe, competent, and age-appropriate care to all referred patients.
Education
Bachelor's degree in Social Work (BSW) is required; Master of Social Work (MSW) preferred.
Experience
At least one year of clinical experience in multidisciplinary settings is preferred.
Licensure/Certification
Licensed social worker credential is preferred.
Mental and Physical Requirements
This role requires considerable mental focus, excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to communicate detailed information effectively. Approximately 80% of the time involves interaction with patients, families, visitors, staff, and physicians. The position requires standing and walking for extended periods using proper body mechanics.
Working Conditions
Minimal physical discomfort with frequent exposure to communicable diseases, radiation, anti-neoplastic agents, and occasionally hostile individuals. Ability to function well under stress is essential.
