Summary

The Associate Center Director (ACD) and Division Chief of Discovery Science at Moffitt Cancer Center

(Moffitt) is a senior academic leadership role responsible for driving center-wide, transformative research

innovation. The ACD is responsible for providing strategic vision, scientific leadership, and administrative

oversight for the Division across multiple disciplines within the Departments of Drug Discovery;

Immunology; Metabolism & Physiology; Molecular Oncology; Tumor Microenvironment & Metastasis. A

primary responsibility of this role is fostering collaboration across research and clinical faculty and senior

administration and for driving team science partnerships that advance innovative paradigm- and practice changing science for clinical translation and back-translation.

The ACD of Discovery Science partners with other ACDs (Clinical, Physical & Quantitative, Population, and Translational Sciences; Community Outreach & Engagement; Shared Resource Management; Research Education & Training; Research Career Development; Administration) in advising the Cancer

Center Director on setting research priorities and scientific vision as a member of the Research Executive Committee (REX). The ACD will maintain top-tier active research programs that are principally funded by

extramural grants; publishes original reports in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals; contributes local, national and international service to professional societies and committees/study sections/advisory

boards; and provides teaching and mentoring of faculty, staff, fellows, and graduate students.

This is an essential leadership position to retain Moffitt’s NCI Designation as a Comprehensive Cancer

Center. This role is critical to ensuring the scientific rigor, reproducibility, translation, and impact of cancer research while advancing the overall mission of Moffitt and improving cancer outcomes through

innovative research.

The ACD of Discovery Science provides high-level strategic leadership and administrative direction for academic research. Specific activities include leadership and coordination of the five academic

departments in the Division, including the appointments of Chairs and Vice Chairs; oversight of the Division Appointment, Promotion &Tenure (APT) Committee; establishment of search committees for

faculty recruitment; and annual review of space for faculty needs. This position provides shared oversight of Research Programs involving the Division of Discovery Science and partners with the ACDs of Shared

Resource Management and Research Administration on services that are aligned with this Division. The ACD collaborates with Senior Leadership in research strategic planning and evaluation.

It is anticipated that the administrative duties of this leadership role will require 25% effort, whereas research, teaching and service will comprise 75% effort. These allocations are not fixed, however, and will be reviewed and refined each year in collaboration with the Cancer Center Director.

Minimum Skills/Specialized Training Required

• Leadership experience in basic/discovery science relevant to cancer within an academic or

research setting

• Strong track record of collaborative research, scientific rigor, and contributions to multidisciplinary

cancer research

• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated ability to provide strategic direction and manage complex research activities
• Proven exceptional leadership and mentorship skills for research programs, faculty, trainees, and

staff

• Ability to collaborate with senior level team members, including other ACDs, Assistant Center

Directors, Vice Presidents, Senior Directors, Directors, and Managers.

• Thought leader in basic/discovery science who can identify research gaps and who can anticipate

research directions and opportunities

• Ability to foster scientific collaborations and serve as Principal Investigator (PI) for large, multiproject

research grants and contracts

• Commitment to building highly collaborative research teams, culture, and a nurturing yet exciting

scientific environment

• Demonstrated ability to understand, advance, and support catchment area-related activities and

to serve as a champion for education efforts within the Division

Preferred Experience

• Senior Member/Professor rank is preferred, along with a history of academic excellence and sustained

peer-reviewed extramural funding by NCI, other institutes of NIH, and the Department of Defense

• Previous experience in a Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) leadership role is preferred, e.g., as a

Research Program Leader or in another specific CCSG role with experience in developing/reviewing the

P30 grant as well as participation in program review

• Track record of successfully working across complex research and clinical environments

Salary Range

$293,280.00 - $461,760.00

Salary ranges posted for this position represent the expected base pay range for the role. Actual compensation may vary based on location and a variety of job-related factors, including experience, skills, education, and internal equity among Team Members in similar positions.
