Tips to Help Break into Your First MSL Role

 The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role, has become one of the most sought-after career paths in the Pharmaceutical and Biotech industry. What does it take to land a role as a Medical Science Liaison? As an MSL Recruiter, this is a question that I am asked at least several times per week – and perhaps even several times per day. I want to share my experience, opinions, and best practices for positioning you as an attractive candidate for a career as a Medical Science Liaison. Breaking into industry with your first role as an MSL requires a tremendous amount of effort and persistence. More importantly, it requires patience. However, my number one recommendation is to stay positive and focused if this is truly what you want for your career. 

1)     WHY do you want to become an MSL? To start, make sure you have researched the role and responsibilities of an MSL so that you are 100% sure this is the career you want to pursue. You need to fully understand what an MSL does and be prepared to explain your interest in the position on an interview. More importantly, be prepared to answer the question, “Why do you want to become an MSL?” I guarantee you will be asked this question on interviews and from recruiters. If you are willing to travel extensively, are a self starter and strong communicator, have an advanced

scientific degree and strong scientific acumen as well as clinical experience; you are a potential candidate for a Medical Science Liaison role.
