Aspiring MSL Insight: When to Present of the Interviewing Company's Product

In our last episode, insightsspoke about having a back-pocket presentation. In this installment, he presents the counter argument to that. There are times when you have to Tin-Cup it.

The MSL presentation is a make-it or break-it variable in you job interview.

Some candidates play it safe on the presentation, and some people Tin-Cup it. Do you remember the movie Tin Cup. Well, at the end, the main character, Roy McAvoy had to decide to lay up or go for the green. And he decided to go for the green.

As you approach your presentation, you have to make a similar decision. If you have a back-pocket presentation, you can certainly present it and that would be like lay-up…not taking any unnecessary risk. Others, Tin-Cup it and go for the green by presenting on that company’s drug. It’s a high risk/high reward scenario. If you hit the perfect shot and land on the green, you’ve positioned yourself to win. But if you fail to hit it perfectly, it could spell disaster.

If you choose to go for the green, and pull it off, you show the company that you are brave and can learn new things quickly. They will probably think, “She knows the data better than we do, how could we not hire her?” But you need to know that data cold because you are going to be speaking to the experts on the drug.

How can you decide to lay up

or tin cup it. That’s where you have to rely on a good recruiter, your caddy, who can help you understand if you’re playing with the lead or playing from behind. If you’re playing without a caddy, then you sense that you’re the lead candidate, Michael advises to lay up.
